Right in the heart of Darbellabana district and directly stands the muse of this article. Yes, it’s Darbellabbana for Culture, Arts and Skills and Environmental Development Center. Once linesmag entered the center, Dr. Afaf Badran, manager of the center, welcomed us with a smile that held a lot of unshaken faith and unfailing persistence. Those were the values that center translates into actions. And this what you will read about throughout the article.

Tell us more about the birth of Darbellabbana for Culture, Arts and Skills and Environmental Development center

Above all, the center is the first cultural building to exist in Darb ellabbana. We were the first ones to set foot in the area and start implementing our vision through our program. Later, Dr. Ali Labib founded Lala studio and then also CILA: Cairo Institute for Liberal Arts started working in the neighborhood in addition to the House of Egyptian Architecture which was in the restoration phase when the center began functioning. So, it’s almost as if the center attracted all other organizations to co-exist and have their share in developing Darb ellabbana.

Did you face any challenges concerning the operation of the center?

One of the major challenges was that since the center is a non-profit organization so the people participating are always changeable. To clarify, people who come and volunteer in the activities and programs that the center offers are never constant. In addition to that, I have to say that I’m the one funding the place. So, I’m paying for it to run in every aspect, from the rental fee to electricity, guarding and cleaning. It’s also worth mentioning that if any revenue comes, it directly goes to help the residents of Darb ellabbana district.

What does the center offers to its neighborhood and its users?

The main objective of the center is teaching and training. However, the message the center wants to convey is far beyond that. I want people to discover who they are and what they are capable of doing. Not only that but also to invest in their talents and skills, earn a living from them and live a fulfilling life.

Courses, lectures and workshops

Darbellabbana for Culture, Arts and Skills and Environmental Development Center gives people chances to learn new things and develop their skills. From lectures and courses to workshops and exhibitions, the center dedicates itself to all those in need. For instance, there was a course for underprivileged people about quilting and patchwork that they truly benefit from and created absolute artworks in. Also, there was carpentry and other woodwork workshops for those who were interested in those fields. It’s important to say that the center offers these lectures and courses for free to those who can’t afford to join.  In addition to all that, the center also provides fun and also beneficial activities to the kids of the area to fill out their imagination and fuel their creativity. Some of the activities include drawing, painting and modeling.

Exhibitions and showrooms

In addition to courses and workshops, the center also works as an exhibition hall. From the very start, we were keen on exhibiting less-known artists and photographers’ works. We do this so as to showcase their talents to the whole world and help them get noticed and earn money afterwards.
