Burberry was globally under fire after burning their unsold products. Last September 2018 Burberry announced that they won’t be destroying its unsold goods and will co-operate with the UK sustainable fashion brand ‘Elvis & Kresse’ to achieve sustainability. The evolution of Burberry as a sustainable brand started by transforming almost 100 tons of leather offcuts. The brand plans to reuse the offcuts to produce accessories, bags and clutches in the coming five years.

“Modern luxury means being socially and environmentally responsible,” Marco Gobbetti, Burberry’s CEO. Charities that focus on renewable energy will receive half of the profit according to a declaration made by Burberry foundation.

“For the first time, we are setting targets for greenhouse gas emissions that apply to our extended supply chain. Which is a significant addition to our target of becoming carbon neutral in our own operational energy use by 2022.” Pam Batty, Burberry’s VP of Corporate Responsibility.

Certainly, last week on the London Fashion Week, Burberry made history. Through introducing its first fully carbon neutral fashion show at its Spring Summer 2020 Collection.

Most importantly, the Brand shared on their official Instagram account “we have offset our impacts, such as the flights of guests traveling to London specifically for the show and the build and production of the event, through VSC-certified REDD+ projects which prevent deforestation and conserve tropical rainforest in the Brazilian Amazon.”

“This is a collection inspired by our past and dedicated to our future. It’s the evolution of our Burberry kingdom.” Riccardo Tisci Burberry’s Creative Director. He also added that “ My first year at Burberry was about understanding and refining the new codification for the house. With that foundation in place, I feel ready to start exploring what’s at the heart of this incredible brand.”

However, it is also important to mention that in 2017, Burberry decided to become carbon neutral in 2022. Through obtaining 100% of their operational energy from renewable sources. As a result, according to their website, the fashion brand succeeded in sourcing 48% of their total energy from renewable sources in 17/18.
